When should your young child start a performance training program? The new notion compared to the old school of thought varies quite differently. Firstoff, what is performance training? Sports performance training is specialized training that allows athletes to transfer the learned skills to a specific sport. I personally know, based on my background in physical education and motor skill development, that movement efficiency is essential at all ages. However, starting your child out at the age of 8 years of age is perfect in terms of conceptual understanding and spatial awareness. Young athletes can get a true sense of how to perform basic motor skills with the perfection of functionality with in the performance of those specific skills taught. Overall, here is the real key objectives in starting out at this age! One muscle memory is a developmental factor that doesnt have a maturational aspect in terms of pueberty. This aspect allows youth to be able to work or initialize the utilization of fast-twitch muscle development and create a muscular adaptation that can be further developed over the life of there athletic career. Lastly, when evaluating peak performance, athletes can mentally perform and help their individual athletic output through familarization of movement and skills. When kids in our program are being taugh effective technique of exploding through a lateral agility drill, kids can store muscular feedback and cognitive information that become a base building block for future athletic skill acquistion. Ultimately, this is my thought process on preparing your kids to keep up with the fast developing athletes of the new era.

Corey Phillips, BS, PT, CSS

* Please expand on this article or leave us your comments
